At 14,000 ft the vintage Hawker-Hunter fighter jet was flying under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) and its transponder signal triggered the TCAS in the Southwest jet to dive away from the immediate collision. The ATC should have seen the jets before the TCAS had to activate. In the B-52 near collision, the B-52 didn’t have its transponder on. The Delta pilot had no TCAS warning.
