The Bayesian had a crew of 10 and had 12 passengers. Only the yacht’s chef died, and 6 passengers are missing and presumed drowned. The captain of the Bayesian, James Cutfield 51, told Italian police that he wasn’t monitoring the weather closely and the ship’s retractable keel was raised, even with an anchor depth of 160 feet. Lowering the retractable keel would have added stability and made it harder to capsize.

@Durnyful The yacht's mast stood 72.27 meters (237 feet) high above the designated water line, just short of the world's tallest mast which is 75.2 meters, according to Guinness World Records. The retractable keel allows Bayesian to dock in harbors with enough water depth. The unanswered question is why was it retracted in a deep anchorage.

@andrewashmore8000 Even a thin fin keel will exsert a moment force against the water to counter act the wind force on the mast to keep from capsizing. Even kids sailing dinghies knows in high winds to drop the center board or side boards to help from capsizing.

@Durnyful A sailboat with a deep keel dampens out the surface waves and wind better than a shallow keel vessel and rides better in the water due to the lower center of gravity without sails deployed at anchor.

@Durnyful Yes, it took the Bayesian to capsize at anchor in less than 5 minutes by what the old sailboat's captain anchored next to her said.
