  1. The P-3 dropping sonar-buoys only work down to about 1,000 ft. Depending on how deep the submersible is, there will be a thermocline layer (temperature gradients) of different temperature blocking any sound penetrating the layer from below. At deeper levels a pycnoline layer is the results of the thermocline and halocline (salinity gradients) further blocking sound from below to penetrate upward.
