After a number of incidents of a single airline pilot in the cockpit involved in a crash, whenever one of the two airline pilots has to leave the cockpit area, a cabin crew member from the back has to sit with the single airline pilot flying the plane until the other airline pilot returns to the cockpit as a safety measure.

When an airline pilot has to “Deadhead”, fly back to another airport as a passenger, he has to fly in the passenger compartment. If the flight is fully booked up with no open seat, the deadhead pilot is allowed to ride on the jump seat with the permission of the captain. Normally, this is no big deal, having an extra set of hand in the cockpit in an emergency. That's the reason you see pilots in uniform waiting at the gate to the plane, if there is no empty seat he'll ask the captain if he could ride in the jump seat.

@somnuswaltz5586 The FAA requires that there must always be at least one other crew member with the pilot in the cockpit since February 2020.

@richwightman3044 Did you even watch the video? It said he was an Alaska pilot, flying deadhead in the jump seat to pick up a flight in California flying down from Washington.

To clarify an airline pilot as a “Deadhead”, he is flying to another airport as a passenger, he has to fly in the passenger compartment and his ticket is paid by the airline. He is also paid a travel rate by the company for traveling to pickup a flight in another city. A pilot commuting is traveling from his home to the hub he is paid to fly out of and is called a commuting pilot. He is not paid by the airline for his travel time or given a company paid ticket, he has to catch rides if there is an empty seat available on the flight or ride in the jump seat.
