The US Supreme Court's opinion stated that a pardon carries "an assertion of guilt and acceptance of a confession of it…". A person who accepts the pardon of a crime can give an Alford plea to accept the pardon. An Alford plea which is a guilty plea in which the defendant maintains their innocence. The defendant admits that there is enough evidence to convict them. When applying for a job, bank loans, or a professional license, they ask if you have ever been arrested or convicted. It stays on your record. You do not have to accept the pardon, but it stays open and cannot be cancelled by the next administration.

@booo-u8k It wasn’t Trump who started this process, it was President Ford who started this procedure when he pardoned Nixon before he was ever charged with a crime and the grand jury was still investigating him. It became a moot point for the DOJ to continue the investigation since the conclusion was already determined and charging him would become a political vendetta.
