Putin can sell oil and gas to the West and get hard western currencies, but the West will limit Putin’s purchases to essential commodities required for living and ban non-essential luxurious commodities to his Oligarchs. The once prosperous upper Russian middle-class will have to sell their Rolex watches, Patek Philippe watches, BMW, Porches, and other luxurious high price goods on the Black Market to get hard western currencies. The Chinese businessmen will bribe the Russian border guards as they cross the boarder carry suitcases with hard western currencies looking to make a huge profit on the Russian black market and driving back across the boarder in tracker trailers loaded with used luxurious Western goods.

The Western oil companies are selling their Russian oil assets in the short-term is because they know that the price of oil in the West will go up and hope the solidarity with the boycott of Russian goods will buy them some good PR as the price of gas at the pump goes up and people start complaining against the oil companies; they‘ll just blame the Russians, and rightly so.
