Like drowning people grabbing others to stay above the water, the people at the bottom fights to get the weight of others off them. Soldiers in marching formation will keep a minimum distance when marching. The people were so close together that they couldn’t shift their feet for balance once someone lost their balance and added their weight to them, thus the “Domino” affect of falling.
