  1. Russia wants the West and NATO’s assurances that they won’t let Ukraine joint NATO’s mutual defiance alliance against aggression, or else they will invade Ukraine to keep them from joining NATO. The former USSR had sent military forces to suppress independent movements in Hungary and Czechoslovakia during the Cold War to keep them from leaving their control. Who in their right minds would ever trust Russia to honor their word?
