It’s called recon by speculative fire on a likely Russian position to provoke a reaction to confirm the presence and strength using indirect artillery fire and drones for observation of movement. The Russians do the same thing except they send small groups of mobilized “Cannon Fodder” to attack a likely Ukrainian position and have the Russian blocking soldiers, whose job is to prevent the “Cannon Fodder” from retreating, to observe Ukrainian direct fire that will reveal their position, instead of indirect artillery fire that doesn’t.
