  1. A military trench line is to provide cover against enemy soldiers attacking. There are firing positions deeper than the trench line along the line; the shallow trench line is so a soldier can move quickly to the trench dugout which provides more protection against enemy mortars and artillery fire. The Ukrainian soldiers waited in the dugout until the Russians stopped shelling and quickly attacked while the Russians waited in the dugouts. The Russian mobilized conscript soldiers were poorly trained and just waiting to be over run; that’s the reason the Russians were either KIA’s or POW‘s.
