The Russians are poorly trained or lazy; they stored a large amount of artillery shells too close to the howitzer and at ground level exposing them to counter battery fire causing catastrophic damage. Small amounts of ammunition should only be near the howitzer and the rest should be in a deep trench and away from the howitzer based on the amount stored and shuttled up to the howitzer. The below ground level ammo, if hit, would explode upward creating a very big and wide hole but cause less damage to the gun crew if it is deep below ground level and far away from the gun.
