Reconnaissance is to locate the enemy position in relation to your own position and troop strength. The Russian recon team must have report, "the Ukrainians are close by and they saw us, but we don't know how many!" The Russians may not know how far away they are or what their troop strength is, but it is within drone distance.

@johnshite4656 I never said it would be helpful. The drone could have a range of about 5 miles for quad type drone, the mortar range can be about the same or slightly less for a large infantry mortar.

@johnshite4656 The Ukrainian position could be a lot closer. The Ukrainians could have held their fire using their direct fire weapons (i.e. line of sight heavy machine guns, tanks) that would give away their position and used indirect mortar fire directed by the drone.
