The Ukrainian military holdouts were the rear guard force in Mariupol’s Azovstal Steel Plant to engage the Russian force in protracted combat to give the rest of their forces time to retreat to a new defense line. The Ukrainian rear guard forces were in underground tunnels able to withstand the bombardment, while the Ukrainian military fighting the Russians above ground were exposed. The Russian wasted a lot of munitions on the rear guard forces underground which would have caused a lot more damage above ground, thus saving Ukrainian lives; both military and civilian. The Ukrainian military holdouts in Mariupol’s Azovstal Steel Plant pose no military threat to the Russian forces in Mariupol or had pose no threat to the Russian supply lines since the holdouts were totally isolated living in underground tunnels and couldn’t be re-supplied from the outside. The capture of Mariupol’s Azovstal Steel Plant was just a pyrrhic victory for Russian political propaganda.
