  1. The first Russian soldier knew that there was a drone overhead and ran through the kill zone before the drone operator could call in a mortar strike. He was halfway through the kill zone before the drone operator could detect movement and zoom in. The second group of Russian soldiers actually slowed down to a walk in the kill zone, allowing the Ukrainian mortar to fire one lucky round in the known targeting coordinates.

  2.  @markwebster1238  The mortar crew had done their bracketing and locked down the range. The Russian's pace was not constant and slowed down to a walk. If the Russians kept their fast pace when they entered the kill zone, the mortar might have hit behind and they only might have been injured.
