  1. The US missile is designed to hit next to the ship and explode underwater. The underwater explosion creates a huge gas bubble that collapses and causes a pressure differential in the water and breaks the back of any ship. Like the famous RAF 617 squadron, the “Dam Busters”, using a small explosive charge and water pressure to destroy the German Dams in WW2.

  6.  @petermizon4344  Barnes Wallis calculated that it would take 30 tons without the water pressure. The bomb had to be place at a certain distance and depth from the dam wall, whereas it wouldn't work.
