  1. Both the Ukrainians and Russians know the fighting in the Bakhmut front is just political and not of strategic importance. Putin is sending in light infantry without much artillery, air support, or armor support; “Cannon Fodder”. The Ukrainians are in a holding operation, maintaining the front line, while holding their major reserves until the arrival of the Western weapons to begin their counter offense. The Ukrainian counter offense will be either north or south to cut off the Russian supply routes. The Russians know this, but hope that a minor victory in the Bakhmut area can be used for propaganda back home.
