This hatred in the area has been going on since ancient times. Pakistan is mostly Sunni Muslim and Iran is mostly Shia Muslim. There has been border fights between the extremist religious factions for millennia. Afghanistan another neighbor of Iran is also Sunni Muslim. Afghanistan and Iran have been fighting minor border conflict for religious beliefs and also for the limited water resource in the area since the Taliban took over Afghanistan. China wants to build a railroad network in Pakistan to give it easier access to the Indian Ocean and is also afraid the religious tension would ignite their Muslim minority to revolt.
