There is precedence for a former US President committing a crime while in office. Richard Nixon admitted that he had committed crimes while in office by accepting Gerald Ford’s pardon preventing him from being charged after he resigned; you can only accept a Presidential pardon after you admit guilt. Nixon would have been charged and convicted if Ford didn't pardon him.
