  1. For generations after the Civil War no Southerner would join the GOP, they would be call “Yellow Dog Democrats”, because they would rather vote for a “Yellow Dog” then vote for Abraham Lincoln’s party. When the Democrats moved toward civil rights, the Southerners joined the GOP.
