The act of cutting off one's pinky is called yubitsume, which literally translates to "finger-shortening" and it's a huge part of Yakuza culture. In the gang, members are expected to cut off their pinky fingers as a show of remorse for an offence that they have previously committed. A 1993 Japanese government survey found that 45 percent of modern yakuza members had severed finger joints - while 15 percent had performed the act at least twice. Japan has been listed in the top ten safest countries in the world with low violent crime rate. Some things haven't been westernized.
