  1. The submersible Titan was the largest carbon fiber pressure vessel for deep diving. Most other deep submersible pressure hull is made of metal. The carbon fiber reduced the overall weight and increased the internal volume allowing it to carry five people. Carbon fiber failure mode is cracking like an egg shell and splitting of the fibers; metal will deform, bend and crumple. To monitor for carbon fiber failure, the designers installed sound monitors to detect cracking sound and hopefully allowing the pilot of the submersible to surface.
