@boudgaming5123 yea czarist Russia sold Alaska to these an Secretary of State Seward to help pay off the war debt from the Napoleonic Wars. Seward was widely ridiculed and criticized for paying too much money for Alaska. It was called Seward's folly.

@0900370pian yeah that's true. They have been in Soviet or Russian hands during practically most people's lifetimes. The people that were alive when Japan owned them are probably in their eighties and nineties now.

@3811eric but then Russia would have to use troops to defend those islands that they couldn't use in Ukraine. Russia would have to choose which is more important Ukraine or some sparsely-populated volcanic islands.

actually they do have some of their own lands with their own laws in the US. They have their own government and jurisdiction within their lands. Cherokees in North Carolina and some other tribes out west.

@joashex tactical nuke still produce Fallout and that will go wherever the wind blows. Prevailing winds generally go west to east so Russia use tactical nukes in Ukraine it's likely they will get a lot of the fall out themselves. Tactical nukes really aren't that practical of a weapon because they're hard to control and predict.
