I am still holding out hope that they will use him in a prisoner Exchange. The civilian that he killed used to be KGB and once was a bodyguard for Brezhnev so that civilian wasn't totally innocent. He was facing a hostile but rightly so civilian population and any of them has a potential to shoot back at Russian soldiers. No matter what he did he was going to prison if he was caught and if he didn't shoot he would have probably ended up in prison or in a Work Camp. Seems to me he was caught in a classic double bind damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. It seems to me it's always the grunts and not the officers who ordered them are the ones who get punished

I don't know the Russian military Rules of Engagement or if Russia has a provision that a soldier can disobey an unlawful order. He might not have a choice but to obey.

@yakivpopavich yeah yeah I hope he has a good lawyer and maybe he can go to a higher court of appeal if there was any wrong doing in the court procedure. It would be fascinating to be a lawyer for some of these accused, because if you won the case or happened to get a reduced sentence for your client then your law career would take off like a rocket and you would become a rich man because everybody would want to hire you and pay you big money for your representation. You might not be popular with a lot of people but you would end up wealthy. I don't know the full details of this case, if the victim was offering no resistance and was obviously unarmed that would be a very difficult case for a lawyer to win or even get a reduced sentence for his client. I don't know how the appeal system works in Ukraine or how good a lawyer this kid had but it will be interesting to see if he does get an appeal.

@batzman8585 I wouldn't necessarily say they're losing. At the beginning Russia was expected to take over at least half the country and the capital city of kyiv within three or four days. How did that work out for you Russia?

@LokiTheGodofMischief well last time I heard William Calley was selling jewelry in Columbus Georgia. He was court-martialed and I'm not sure what happened after that it's been a long time ago. I think his commanding officer Medina got away with it. I know Vietnam Vets though who totally disagree with what Callie did. I don't know if William Calley spend time in Leavenworth but he sure should have done so.
