  5.  @AjaxDGonzo  I'd say that education, a wide education, gives you the ability to think critically, to judge ideas on their merit, to balance pros and cons. With dogma of any kind, that kind of questioning is neither required or desired. You and I are engaged in a discussion. You're not telling me what to believe and vice versa. I think the surest sign of real intelligence is the willingness to keep learning, to have curiosity. And curiosity about the place of humans in the world, the meaning of life etc, those are great questions. I guess my beef with dogma is that it stifles curiosity and tends to make non-believers the enemy. I believe in some kind of universal spirit, but what it looks like, well...I just keep on talking, thinking, traveling, reading. The older you get the less you 'know' is the cliche, the more you realize how mysterious reality is.

I do believe in a spiritual life, but I tend to look to the wonder of human existence, my fellow humans and the beauty of nature.

  20.  @ministryoftruth1451  I don't think we're going to convince on another. I could argue that you can prove scientific theories, whereas religious beliefs exist only in the human mind. I'm not a believer in atheism, which I find just as limiting as some religious beliefs. Nor do I subscribe to 'science can answer' everything, there's simply too much mystery. I just am not an adherent of 'God as a superhuman being' or of any one set of metaphysical rules (religion).

He was quite clear that it wasn't a matter of proof; you simply choose to believe or not. I don't deny your belief, but I'll continue to see creation as a mystery until it's proven otherwise. It never will be, just more mystery.

Did some other power bring down the Iron Curtain and free half of Europe? Is someone else keeping Taiwan from being gobbled up? Until Russia and China eventually become democracies we are the default policeperson of the world, warts and all.

  56. Interesting. I enjoyed this back and forth and came away agreeing with Harris. How is helpful to anyone to have someone spout hate in the public sphere? No one gets away with that kind of talk about black Americans (rightly), and Jews are not some group we're just allowed to slander. If Kanye seemed like he might be questioning his beliefs, that might be worthwhile, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It reminds a little of Stephen Colbert's refusal to use Trumps name anymore. Don't feed the narcissists.

  57. Loury keeps repeating 'differences in cultures, practices and norms' to say that people won't necessarily achieve equal representation in every field of endeavor. That sounds an awful lot like an excuse not to fight racism and sexism. Just repeating that phrase doesn't make it a stronger argument, but that seems to be all he has.
