  38.  @thadofalltrades  it’s an interesting comparison, but the French Revolution was fought partly to throw the Catholic Church out of government and partly to overthrow the aristocracy. America had no Catholic Church and no aristocracy, we were fighting colonialism and the founders made a very clear distinction between church and state precisely because of European history. And while I am not an atheist, and do believe in universal human rights, I would not describe them as God given. The race has struggled, and continues to struggle, very often against religions, to secure those rights.
