My question is why is Islam society in general ‘behind’ other religions in democracy, women’s rights etc. Christianity was not much different in the Middle Ages. Why was there no enlightenment in Islam?

@JackSchitt-p9t Not sure which unipolar moment you’re referring to. There have been 3 superpowers my entire 66 years. And during that time Russia has lost quite a lot, partly from the inevitable failure of dictatorship, and partly from trying to keep up with us militarily. As a failing superpower, they’ve already lost this war. There is a fine balance between fighting the wrong wars and the right ones, but capitulation to tyranny simply breeds more tyranny.

@mikebasketball11 It appears to me that Harris is singling out Muslim fundamentalists and giving Israeli fundamentalists a pass. It’s now common knowledge that Netanyahu was secretly supporting Hamas against other Palestinians to keep them from uniting. I’ve been watching this conflict since the 70’s. There are no ‘good’ guys’.

@mikebasketball11 I don't hear him calling out Netanyahu and the Israeli right, who secretly supported Hamas to splinter the Palestinians. I will say that I'm perplexed as to why Islam is behind the historical curve when it comes to democracy, women's rights etc.

@mikebasketball11 the Koran or the Bible or the Torah or Hindu scripture, wherever you have 'true believers', you have severe intolerance/violence. There are right wing Israeli leaders who have clearly stated they want to wipe out Palestinians. Netanyahu was officially interrogated for corruption and the info leaked and includes the above mentioned backdoor support for Hamas. It makes perferct sense from the Israeli right, who have no interest in peace, never have. I'm 68, been watching this conflict since the '70s. The US has come close to brokering peace in the past; I think that's got to happen again. You may be absolutely correct about the Koran as the reason for Islamic backwardness, although Turkey has built a democracy.

@mikebasketball11 Have not read the Koran, Bible, Torah or Hindu scriptures. I certainly see plenty of intolerance/violence from fundamentalists of every major religion. As for Netanyahu, yes. He was interrogated about corruption and the interrogation was leaked and contained an admission of aiding Hamas, which makes sense coming from the Israeli right who want a splintered Palestinian opposition. Muslims in America are assimilating, so blaming the Koran is a bit simplistic, in my view. We have more home grown Christian terrorists than Muslim ones.

I haven't read the Koran, the Bible, the Torah or Hindu scriptures, but fundamentalists from all those religions cause violence/strife across the globe, including America, where white christian nationalists are the chief worry for the FBI.
