  1. This is an ongoing mantra with conservatives. And of course there’s truth in balancing our checkbook…up to a point. But our economy remains robust enough that paying the interest is not really a problem. Cutting the deficit is a political football that neither party wants to address because citizens don’t like hearing bad news. Taxes have to go up and programs have to be cut. Try selling that to the electorate, instead you see both parties promising to raise the deficit.

  2. Conservative boilerplate. Let’s remember which party throws tax cuts at the rich, then complains we can’t pay the debt.

  3.  @JimDavidson-FingerpickinGood  I agree that spending has to be cut, but it's nonsense to say taxes don't matter. We've had a long steady decline in corporate and marginal tax rates going way back. And then it boils down to what to cut and which interest group/political leader - farmers, Wall St., Health industry, social programs - is going to accept those cuts. Everyone has a sacred cow. The military, wisely from their pov, spreads production around the country so that cutting waste becomes harmful to someone. Stossel says cut the FCC; that ain't gonna save much.
