  8.  @lokai7914  Open a history book. Every part of the safety net was fought for with blood in America's streets, not a gift from Henry Ford (or Elon Musk). No surprise that the GOP hates the safety net because they worship at the church of the 'Free Market'. There's no free market and there's no socialist utopia, just a constantly shifting balance.

  10.  @teekay_1  Two sides of the same coin. Everything that keeps capitalism in check, the SEC, Social Security, FDA, FTC is not a gift from capitalism, it's socialism. The reverse is true too, socialism doesn't exist without capitalism. The 'Free Market' is a utopian concept, just like perfect socialism. It's just a spectrum.

  11. @@burnzitto2734 Regulatory or not they’re government entities provided for the common good, imposed on the free market. Conservatives have long tried to privatize SS; never gonna happen, retirees need guaranteed checks. Can’t have a free market without some socialism, some IRS, some Federal highways, some national parks, you name it, there’s a lot the free market doesn’t do.

  12. @@burnzitto2734 Yes, that makes sense on one level, but it gets very hard to manage. People would opt out, not save for retirement, then be on welfare. I certainly would ve opted out at a young age. I agree it’s not perfect. As a liberal, I also think millionaires should pay more in ss taxes (they get a pass above 140k earnings)

  16. The old bait and switch - communism ain't socialism. But guess what is, SS, FTC, FDA, EPA, pretty much everything the government does. Funny thing is, conservatives only use socialism when they want to insult something. "Welfare is socialism etc." But if it's a service they like, well, you won't hear it then. No bankers were crying socialism when they got bailed by...your government.
