  1. While understand America has had multiple fiascos in its quest to spread global democracy, I don’t count Ukraine in that light. Speaking as an American who saw the demise of the USSR and consequent flourishing of democracy in Eastern Europe and beyond, containment and degradation of superpower dictatorships has always been our policy. And while Russia may have gained territory in this war, the price exacted, Russia’s political and financial isolation, and its military incompetence and weakness, is a victory for the West. Anyone going soft on Putin is either naive or bought off.
