  2.  @woobilicious.  Agreed. I have a certain admiration for the man, certainly very bright. He did call himself a libertarian, which is basically a belief in an individualist fairyland. Anything to do with the common good, say keeping air or water clean, or would be taken care of, in his thinking, by the market. That’s an idea that has a long track record of failure. He’s anti-union, anti FDA, anti-almost every federal dept with the exception of defense. Park service-gone. There’s a reason libertarians don’t get elected to run the country.

Or ‘women were better represented in powerful jobs at the turn of the 20th century than today’. The first is a ridiculous comparison between ancient Egypt and modern America; the second an outright fabrication. Sowell’s employer has been a conservative think tank since the 70s. No professional economist is reading him; he writes for his audience.

  7. Mearsheimer is longstanding advocate against American foreign policy. While there's truth here, there's also a ridiculous assumption that Russia under Putin doesn't pose an existential threat to world peace. Contrarianism for its own sake is a petty line of work.

  8.  @droe2570  I’d be interested to hear the meaning of this clip. ‘No solutions’ is pertinent because Kisin is also opposed to action on climate change. That may not be a problem in the UK, but NYC’s air today is at its worst ever due to Canadian wildfires.

  9.  @adilhayder.  That part of Sowell’s teaching is clear. I’m interested in how that affects our response to American slavery. If it is to excuse racism in America, which fits with body of Sowell’s thinking, it’s a toothless, and frankly repugnant argument.

I call polio vaccines a solution, just like numerous medical advances in my lifetime. ‘You’re not going to solve climate change?’ Funny how you can take simplistic aphorism and use it to deny taking action on a dire, world wide problem. If Sowell is such a genius, why is he relegated to conservative YouTube? He’s a lightweight, dogmatic conservative who never, never veers from the party line. Even in economics he’s considered a journeyman.

The GOP is the party of billionaires, Dems have gone along at times, but the GOP cuts taxes for the rich, gives them unlimited financial input into elections (Citizens United), hampers the IRS from auditing the rich etc.

As for the idea that there are no solutions, a ham handed philosophy at best, how did we conquer polio? Why are less people dying from war than a century ago?
