I feel like the core problem is that everyone is wired to be skeptical, up to a point, and some people are wired to be apparently too skeptical, have authority issues, and as a result they don't trust much of anything they can't 'prove' to themselves. They lack the educational resources needed to enable them to prove that the earth is, in fact, round. Theoretically, if they are smart, this kind of skepticism could be very useful to an actual scientist, but since they don't pursue formal education, they dabble with skills they have instead. Greatly exacerbating this skepticism is that the US for example has gutted it's education system, which is why you see more young people who aren't education enough scientifically to know why the earth is actually round, and thus a spike in young people that believe For others though it seems to be clearly just money, because followers will invest in this stuff apparently. People do a lot for 'fame'.

  2.  @Iown291  People who capitalize without rhyme or reason are usually trolling hard in my experience, but who can say these days? My pet theory as to why the interest went up is that trolls more or less pushed the 'theory' on unsuspecting bumpkins. Trolls have a pretty big influence on the internet, but most people are blissfully unawares.

  3. It could easily be a side-effect of the decay of the education system. I think to graduate high school in Ontario, I only needed 2 low level science classes, which cannot cover this kind of thing in that time frame/level. I did more, but I don't think the average student takes science unless they have to, as it has a reputation for being difficult.
