I feel like the core problem is that everyone is wired to be skeptical, up to a point, and some people are wired to be apparently too skeptical, have authority issues, and as a result they don't trust much of anything they can't 'prove' to themselves. They lack the educational resources needed to enable them to prove that the earth is, in fact, round. Theoretically, if they are smart, this kind of skepticism could be very useful to an actual scientist, but since they don't pursue formal education, they dabble with skills they have instead.
Greatly exacerbating this skepticism is that the US for example has gutted it's education system, which is why you see more young people who aren't education enough scientifically to know why the earth is actually round, and thus a spike in young people that believe
For others though it seems to be clearly just money, because followers will invest in this stuff apparently. People do a lot for 'fame'.
