  169.  @laurenmiller9482  "1. They're minimally sentient " - To an extent. But not in the ways that matter in the grand scheme of things. "2. Even if we disregard that, the capacities for sentience are different in a Comatose patient than it is in a Fetus before 18 weeks. " - Shoot. "Basic Capacity - Not even remotely accessible (Fetus <18weeks)" - For a time. But the issue is we know that they will reach a point of sentience regardless. "Proximate capacity - Past or present ability to display something but for some reason unable to do so at that given time. (A comatose patient)" - Which is not relevant because if that was held as a factor then pulling the plug on brain dead people would not be possible. "Ultimate capacity - Immediate ability to actualise and exercise sentience. (People like me and you right now in this moment)" - ok. Why the different capacities are relevant "Okay so a fetus in the womb which doesnt have vocal chords yet has the basic capacity to become a singer and actualise the trait of having a good voice. this is where it's not remotely exercisable at all (because it doesnt have vocal chords) Then let's say we have Ariana Granda. she is singing on stage right now in the current moment. she has the ultimate capacity to actualise that trait of being a singer. But let's say Ariana is asleep or in a coma. She still has that trait of being a singer. shes just not actualising it in that current moment, which is the proximate capacity. Ariana doesnt lose the trait or her value as a singer because shes in a temporary state which doesnt allow her to actualise that trait which is already present as compared to a fetus (<18 weeks) which doesnt even have the ability to actualise that trait of sentience or the other characteristics discussed in the functionalistic approach" - Ok but here is what ur not grasping. Brain dead people being a good example. Prior sentience does not mean much of the capacity for the foreseeable future is not present.
