Stalin used to be more anti religion prior to WW2 but was surprised that during the nazi invasion the Orthodox church rallied to him in the name of national salvation. So he became a bit more lenient in that regard.

I still think countries should strive for more self reliance but not full self reliance and not let themselves be bound by such a restrictive ideology such as the mostly self destructive ideologies of the communist camp. You need to let your citizens have the freedom to innovate and network among themselves with few restrictions in such situations when taking on such a challenge. Without some measure of self reliance you become a slave to global markets and its trends which are often driven by wealthy elites and corporations of the stock market exchanges around the world. Thus over time it paves the way towards a corporate take over and loss of sovereignty. Ideal for me would be 60 percent national ownership (by which i do not mean statist ownership though some of it could be) such as companies that are run by and are headquartered/registered in the home country) and 40 percent unrestricted which would lead to that 40 percent of the economy being dominated by global markets which is ok.

But all the allied victories elsewhere in Europe made that possible as it meant the Axis could no longer allocate resources to Albania and Yugoslavia.

@aurelije True, it may have helped throw off Barbarossa by a couple of months as well which could have had a critical effect. (i.e. had barbarossa started earlier they may have taken Moscow which could have changed everything).
