I think the Brexit wouldn't have happened if we treated the poorest workers (who had to compete with laborers from poorer countries while wages stagnated and living costs, especially private rents rose higher) a little better. They voted for it as working conditions had steadly gotten worse for them. Did Brexit however improve their lot? No not really, it's about as bad as it used to be, maybe marginally better as employment agencies that used to rely on European labor have a smaller work pool and are sometimes forced to treat people a bit better to retain staff. Had we done more as a country to protect those british workers vs exploitative employment agencies and greedy or unscrupulous landlord, many of them wouldn't have voted for Brexit. In fact, many unskilled and semi skilled British workers used to like the EU as it made it easier for them to go on holiday. They only became anti EU because their issues were ignored and they could remember being better off before integration. There's a lesson to be learned here that if we don't stand together, if we ignore or overlook real issues fellow countrymen face then there can be bad consequences for all and we all go down together.
