@comment sense If china invades taiwan it will lose access to the global markets and it will create an internal crisis as population is too high for it to be an autarky. Plus the food crisis this winter. Could risk famines again.

@comment sense China has a different kind of dependency on external markets. It's economy is built on on selling cheaper to produce product around the world, in vast numbers. It needs to sell, without access to the market Chinese business lose most it's revenue and the country will have to try reform to be more focused on the domestic market. For America however, the global financial system is mostly focused around the USA, it doesn't depend so much on selling product. But on appreciation of assets. Hey, i don't like it either but it's the way it is. I think global finance is a bit crooked to be honest. But if they have to revert back to producing their own product, they'll either look to other countries, or within their own countries. A lot of people in the west would welcome factories returning to their own countries. It's more likely though they'll look to set up in poorer countries. Will they lose out from this? Yes they will because China can make things cheap, but has a reliable work force and good social order. In third world it can be chaotic, you set up a factory there? You don't know what might happen next. But nontheless, it does give them an advantage over China that needs access to first world markets more, than the west needs access to cheap chinese products.

@comment sense They would, not because they love Taiwan so much. To some it might be that. It's Realpolitik, they don't want China to grow too strong and potentially become no.1 one day. Keeping Taiwan independent helps give them an edge over China. And if they let China retake it without doing anything it would would probably hurt them geopolitically in the long run, as it paves the way for China to become no.1 one day.

@comment sense Many Americans and westerners do like Taiwan, but when it comes to geo-politics, feelings doesn't really come into it. But as to your question, if they just nuke Taiwan then the whole world would turn against them, it could lead to war. Or a global boycott and China would have to try become an autarky and risk a famine at home. Xi Jinping might be toppled by rivals in CCP who call him dangerous warmonger who ruined Chinese prosperity. It could lead to civil war. But I don't really know what would happen. One thing that I know won't happen, is that the world won't just sit by and do nothing, you're looking at at least an international boycott from the worlds richest countries. Maybe even from Russia which will form closer alliance to India to contain China. And a rapproachment between Russia and the west.

@comment sense Everyone would be fearful and condemn China if it were to happen. It's a nuke for heavens sake, used against your own people! The condemnation would be universal. They would be better off trying to take the island through conventional warfare, nuclear is the worst they could do to tarnish their reputation globally.

@comment sense Believe me it will make more than just me upset. The entire world outside of China and even some within will be upset. From Russia, to Africa. From Australia to South America. From Vietnam to Morocco. Even within China it could trigger a civil war against 'Xi Jinping, the madman who broke our age of prosperity' for that is how his rivals in the CCP will paint it. In their fight to oust him and try repair the damage so they can have a functioning economy and not become pariah state like a giant version of north korea.
