If you have an island of 100 people and one person earns a million a year and the other 99 earn 12k a year, it would seem that the average income is 182,000 a year. It makes it a lot more prosperous looking than it actually is. When the reality is people on fictional island are generally living off 12k a year which is very little. Although grossly exaggerated and simplified for the sake of highlighting a point, I think that we get a bit of this effect (of the very high wages making the average disproportionately higher and thus giving a distorted picture of average prosperity) quite a lot when looking at incomes of certain countries. And I think the growing gaps between rich and poor mean that there will be social discord even strife ahead, especially if people are struggling to pay for their basic needs. And i'm not saying i agree with people turning to political violence or crime because they are poor, especially in a democracy. Just that it is something that could very possibly happen.
