  1. Actually Jedi stopped being a religion and became a science in Phantom Menace when it was revealed that the mysterious 'force' was merely a microscopic life form called 'midichlorian'. Lucas then realised it was a bad move and midichlorians were never mentioned again.

  3. Also Lucas liked Japanese history, the term 'Jidai' from 'Sengoku Jidai' probably  stuck with him.
