Some folk worked in the mines and factories, they generally didnt fare so well. Others lived in the countryside, which was also hard physical labour but had the fresh air, a diet with plenty of gm free vegetables, very little meat, and when they did eat meat it was generally fresh meat and not processed mechanically recovered meat. People generally consumed as many calories as they used up in the day too.
