The simple solution is that the mutation to digest milk actually first occured in 8000bc, with the emperor himself. And our other sources were mistaken! :)

Gilgamesh in the legends was a giant of a man, perhaps it was the emperor in an other guise.

@awalkingfire2176 It's possible he's not really that tall, using some kind of a glamour spell. Or maybe he can actually be that tall through altering the laws of physics to change his size with his unprecedented and god-like psyker abilities.

@austinorlando4326 That wouldn't be possible through natural means, at least not close up. But through his powers yes. It would be very much like an illusionary glamour spell which depends on and enhances a characters magnetism and allure. People who look upon him would be pretty much bewitched and see him as 10 foot tall, or however he wants them to see him. Though i think the emperor can actually alter his size, an illusion is probably a lot less taxing!

@CombatVeteranReacts It is in the sense that it's real meat. Most people, especially in the underhive have to get by on just soylens viridians, aka soylent green like in that movie! Also known as corpse starch, made from human corpses and other bio-matter. Which i assume is artificially enriched with some vitamins and minerals, to prevent mass malnutrition.

@ashardalondragnipurake They probably cleanse the bio-matter though before processing. Like the fast food pink slime they used to use, perhaps still use in places. Which was cleaned with ammonia to kill bacteria, before being rinsed and cooked.

@manticore6963 We could make some nice soylent green out of that left arm!
