  1. The point is they want to 'seperate' through a hard border not a soft border. So that Haitians cant just walk in. It means having to build a wall and militarization of the border.

  2. It's totally understandable things have gotten so bad in Haiti that Dominican Republic would get overwhelmed. Haiti faces serious challenges and has to make some tough decisions if its ever to recover, but part of the solution is reforestation, birth control, education and the building of a high tech port and a low tax international industrial centre. It would take at least 25 years of sticking to this policy before the benefits get fully noticed but things would start to improve.

  3. French is an official language but most people only speak Haitian creole which is mostly derived from French but has become its own thing. A French person could get a gist of what a Haitian is saying and vice versa but they wouldn't fully understand one another.

  5. The island is still called Hispaniola. But the island is made up of two countries. Western Hispaniola is Haiti, the East and centre is Dominican Republic. It's not too different to how the island of Britain is made up of three countries being England, Scotland and Wales (but those countries made a political union).
