  2. Some more traditional muslims have some dumb views on hygiene. They think that cleaning with only water is good enough as they consider water to have purifying properties when in reality it is not enough, especially for teeth and oral hygiene. Thus I wouldnt be surprised if his very father would tell him 'just rinse your mouth with water, none of that tooth paste nonsense' and as a result he got bad breath which he was obviously very self conscious of. And it probably contributed to some measure of alienation from his peers.
