Ironically though, actual communist countries, i.e. Soviet Union, the Warsaw Pact, even Cuba were all rather intolerant and socially somewhat conservative, especially by modern 2024 standards. Painting the western LGBT stuff as a form of capitalist social decadence. They tended to be pro nuclear family and promoted traditional gender roles despite being nominally a feminist compatible ideology. I.e. women would work as nurses, or primary school and nursery school teachers. Men would work in mines or engineering, the army. It would be unusual to see a woman who worked as an engineer or a man who worked as a nurse or primary school teacher. I've heard the argument/theory even that the Soviets as part of their cold war strategy would try to promote social liberalism in the west as a destabilizing force vs their rivals/enemies. I think it was an ex KGB agent that mentioned this but i can't remember his name. While on the home front they would avoid such things.
