  1. I think that craftsmen in the west would produce one in order to prove their skill and get accepted into one of the more prestigious trade guilds of the western empire. Proof that 'I am a sophisticated craftsman/smith and not just a backwater rustic'. They would go on to keep it in their home as a trophy. The eastern guilds on the other hand, found it silly and a bit pointless.
