I think it's not that surprising due to the orthodox christian connection. Going back way further, Ethiopian (axumite back then) kingdoms also had friendly relations with the Byzantine Empire, which the Russian empire considered itself the heir to.

It was because America was pushing for a more global and unified form of capitalism after ww2. Partly to help maintain a united front against the new communist bloc and partly because the feeling was that the age of empires had had it's day. And an american led globalized capitalism could usher in a greater prosperity eventually for all. Such was the mindset behind it at least.

Were Fidel and Che really that rearing to go full nuclear? I've heard before that Che felt that way, but i've never seen any hard evidence to prove it. I'm not trying to defend them btw, i would just like to see where and when they said such a thing. I've tried googling it and have seen sites echoing such sentiments but again they're not giving any hard quotes such as 'in an address on 4th march 1961 fidel said such and such' or in his diary in page X, Che says we need to nuke america. I'd love to know some sources like that. Otherwise it sounds like hearsay.

@meganoobbg3387 I agree to a point. Also i think it's no coincidence that as soon as the soviet union and eastern bloc fell, social programs that had been a corner stone of nato democracies began to get stripped down, and jobs off-shored.
