It's a lot worse in China but there are similar trends going on in the west too (i.e. housing market, wages not keeping up to living costs). I think it's partly because economic power has been largely stripped away from local communities, in the west it is in favour of global elites, the central banks and corporations. They don't like it when a politician breaks ranks, like Liz Truss or Jeremy Corbyn (political right and left respectively) or even Trump to a certain degree, or Bernie Sanders had he been elected as a Democrat leader. I'm not trying to compare west to being as bad as China though, where rather than a global elite, it serves a party elite who practically run the place like a feudal mafia state. At least in the west people still enjoy a more transparent rule of law and individual freedoms. But I do think that on the whole most democratic western countries were better off in the post war 20th century, 1960 to 2001 and they enjoyed more sovereignty and opportunity as people who wanted to make a small business that supported the community did not have to compete with mega corporations back then. And it made business more personable, a business held social bonds with the community.
