To be honest i'd rather rent a council flat/house than rent at private rates, or live at my parents, or house share with strangers to keep rent lower. But i concede that massive blocks all over the place would not be great, they would become hives of urban squalor and crime. It's always the case. A lower or stable population would be a step in the right direction for the simple fact that less people = less housing need. If not for large scale immigration, this would already have happened as people in developed first world countries generally tend to have less kids by choice. But our governments have fallen into the fallacy of trying to seek infinite growth as they think it can be sustained indefinitely until it all comes crashing down to terrible effect.

Valens brother, Valentinian was also injured in combat in one of his many campaigns vs the western barbarians. Decius was the first emperor to die in a battle though after they allowed themselves to get bogged down and vulnerable in swamps. While Valens death could have been prevented had he waited for a western army under the command of Gratian to join him.

The eastern empire lingered on another 1000 years. In what was mostly a slow decline but there were times it seemed to be reversing the trend and looking very strong, only for some new set back or new dangerous enemy to turn up.

I'm actually watching twin peaks season 3 at the moment, for the first time. Pretty good so far but i probably should have watched the originals and particularly Fire walk with me again, as a refresher before going into it.

Chalemet gets a pass for Paul Atreides. Fairly close to how i pictured him in the book. Will be interesting to see how he looks for Messiah if that film gets made in the future.

That was really good.

It certainly got more authoritarian as it lost it's Republican character that had persisted in the Principate era. But was lost after Diocletians reforms into the so called 'Dominate' era. I think this is why there was so little resistance and push-back from the common people, compared to the popular zeal which which would defend their lands in the Republic. As the Germanic kingdoms took over the common people just found they were swapping one overlord for another.
