Che Guevarra was no saint and he was no freedom fighter but his staunchist critics dont' realise how bad things were for poor people in latin american countries (especially central america) and how repressive these regimes like Batista's could be. Guevarra wasn't going up against prosperous liberal democracies and turning them into communist authoritarianisms. He was going up against some pretty harsh and elitist dictatorships who treated poor people not much differently to the time of colonial haciendas. I'm not saying it's right but I can understand why people at the bottom run would have supported him and Fidel. Some would say going from these dictatorships to a communist authoritarianism would be no improvement. But to many of the poorest it was. At least compared to the lowest strata of Nicaraguans, Haitians, Hondurans, Salvadoreans. I don't want to come across as an apologist though, I'm just stating the other side of the argument but for the record I think Cuba should have changed to a real democracy when the Soviet Union fell. But because of the communists tightly maintaining their grip on power the people have had to needless suffer while i'm pretty confident that under a capitalist liberal democracy Cuba could become a first world country and the most prosperous country of all the Caribbean by a longshot. And prosperity is the best weapon against communism and revolution.

No. I'm pretty sure that if Batista managed to hold power Cubans would have been better off, given time. And his successor(s) would likely have gone on to re-establish a full democracy. Especially likely after collapse of USSR but maybe even before then.
