I'd say the decline wasnt even so much due to the British but rather the part 0.28 where in the aftermath the squabbling between possible succsessors almost brought the Mughals to an early end and generally weakened them a lot. Also worth bearing in mind most modern Indians dont even consider the mughal empire as 'Indian'. Because the dynasty had foreign roots and they were another religion (Islam) and the conquest of their lands was pretty brutal.
