  1. I'd say they were slightly ahead around 900-1000 AD. The muslims had the advantage of receiving the far eastern trade so that bolstered their economy to fund cultural works and i'm not gonna lie, Baghdad was an impressive city prior to the Mongols destroying it. I'd say it's destruction lead to the islamic cultural decline/stagnation. By 1300AD i think Europe was ahead. And by the time of the renaissance they were left way behind.
