Call me a nasty cynic, but they probably sold the lion (for some dour 'medicine' related purpose) and Chinese peasants (who for the last few millennia have lived out in the sticks) who have gone to the zoo for the first time are too simple to tell the difference. Yeah I know, I kind of suck for thinking such a thing. But stranger things happen.
